When I download a file that already exists on my hard drive, Opera adds (1) to the end of the file name. I want to get a message asking to replace the file or cancel the download.
It would be logical to assume, if a file of the same name already exists in my download directory, that I have already downloaded it.
I know I can opt to show the Save dialog, but I don't wish to be asked every time I download a file, only if the file has already been downloaded.
A lot of webmasters use the same file name for updates: in that case I would probably just want to overwrite the existing file. More often than not though, I want to cancel the download.
Let's have a dialog like in Windows Explorer when you try to copy a file that already exists, but with the additional option to rename the file as Opera does now. Yes to replace, No to automatically rename the file, and cancel to cancel the download. It would be logical to assume, if a file of the same name already exists in my download directory, that I have already downloaded it. wrong. i often dl files that are not identical but have the same name, if my quick dl option is going to be screwed by adding any dialogs to them, well, there are alternatives only as an option, quick means QUICK, no stupid dialogs I tend to agree with Pesala. I understand that adding dialog might make "quick" seem less "quick," but I DO run into cases where I've already downloaded something and forgot. So it would be helpful to at least have the option of having opera warn you if you have an existing file of the same name. That way, folks like Pesala and I can have a notice turn up and decide if we want to continue, and folks like sidtherat can turn it off. I absolutely agree strongly. I am a dial-up user myself.
