To start, you have to make sure you qualify. Before calling an attorney (and waste time and money), review in detail your financial situation and think if a judge will let you clear all your debts without payin 1 cent. Do you have a job? how much income you have (add your wife's if applicable), then review your monthly expenses, your assets (real property, a second car, a boat, a secod TV, stocks, etc) and think if after selling those things you still will not be able to pay the debt in 10 years. If you can, most probably you will not be able to file for BK or if you can, you will have to pay a % of this debt. Consider other options, debt negotiation is great way to pay back a % of your debt (50% overall) and does not ruin your credit. BK will stay in your credit report for the next 10 years.
I hope this informations helps you.
