The recognized modes of transmission are unprotected sex with a person who is infected. Through contaminated blood, blood products, artificial insemination, organ transplants, skin grafts and so on. From a mother to her baby is also common. The other mode is use of un sterilized needles and sharing of needles with an infected person.
