A sample of blood is taken and sent to a specialized laboratory where the genetic material, also called DNA, is removed. Special techniques of laboratory make it possible gene SOD1 to be folded up and then tested. A form of test is running the sample on a gel to produce of a series of bands. If a genetic change is present, the bands will be in a different place compared with a control sample, which is known not to have a genetic change of gene SOD1. This method is called simple polymorphism of conformation of bank or the SSCP for the shorts. Another method called scheduling can also be employed with at the beginning examines or confirms results.

A positive test means that the genetic cause of FALS was identified. The researchers developed a model of mouse with the same genetic change so that they can better include/understand how a change of gene SOD1 can carry out to the symptoms of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Currently, of new therapies are tried on this animal model to slow down or stop the progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
