After so many years of study on ALS, even scientists do not yet know why ALS affects some people. In 1993, scientist from National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke [color=indigo:92b01b5bbf][b:92b01b5bbf](NINDS)[/b:92b01b5bbf][/color:92b01b5bbf] discovered that a chromosomal mutation in the gene that produces the SOD1 enzyme was associated with ALS.
