The Mediterranean Pyramid and the USDA Food Guide Pyramid suggest eating lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The Mediterranean people eat extremely less red meat, and consumed more plant foods and antioxidant rich vegetables. They also eat cold water fish two or three times a week which contains omega-3 oils which can reduce heart disease risk and boost immune system. It is more useful for the heart health.

The USDA Food Guide Pyramid group’s consider high protein foods jointly and does not separate out the red meat from the heart-healthy fish and nuts. The Mediterranean diet contains little fats known to raise blood cholesterol levels.

The USDA Food Guide Pyramid does not make the distinction between the healthy like monounsaturated oils and the unhealthy fats like saturated and trans fats.
