The National Institutes of Health report that people with high percentages of body fat have an increased risk of diabetes, elevated blood cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. It is important to reduce the fat before pregnancy to avoid other complications.

Normally the women should fall in the 15 to 25 percent range. Based on current information, a woman must have a minimum percent body fat of 15 - 17 percent for regular menstruation. In case woman's percent body fat is too low, her periods may stop and she may experience infertility.

There are several ways of measuring body fat, such as using skinfold calipers to find the amount of fat on the triceps or thighs. It is better to get the fat ratio through Body Mass Index measure.
