There are fewer chances for expiring the domain name because if you have booked your domain online it will automatically renewed if you have enabled this option. In case if you have register with accredited registrar than your registrar send you email in advance, you are notified three times before the domain enters the redemption period.
Under redemption period, you can retrieve your domain name for an additional fee and renew it by contacting customer support. Normally the [u]redemption period is 30 days[/u].
On completion of the redemption period the domain is deleted at the registry. The domain name re-enters the public pool of available domains, and may be registered by anyone.
