I have, as you report, found that getting a decent listing with Google impossible for any term, other than the exact name of the site. However, with MSN, Yahoo and ATW, I enjoy a few top 5 listings and a couple of number ones for good keywords.
Is this because there are so many more pages listed/indexed in Google? It could be, but I think it's at least partly because of Google's algorithm or whatever they're using to rate those magic TOP TEN pages and partly because there is So much rubbish in Googles index.
I've found that if you search almost any common, heavily contested keyword the first ten or even twenty results are generally 80% rubbish. Not good websites with information that relate well to the search term, but more like 'obscure' references and especially a top ten result will be a page showing the top ten SERPs from another smaller SE.
You also find such things as printed news or interviews that can be YEARS old in the top ten. I can't see how they can be deserving of a spot like that. Basically, I can't figure out how Google get the results that they do. Some of the other SEs results make much more sense to me.
